Surender Sharma: the comedy king??

I dont know if you people remember Surender Sharma, the stand-up comedian, But I met and heard him live today. I dunno if he has grown old or our taste of humour has changed, but he wasnt THAT great as I remember he used to be.

Though he looked the same and most of his jokes were aimed at the ‘better-halves’, the spark that used to be there was missing.

Another thing that wasnt as great as I thought it to be when it turned into a reality.

Airtel charges for scheme I didnt apply for

I hardly ever scrutanize the bill. I just see the amount, fill in the cheque and pay it. Thats it. But my dad has the habit of going through its details, which I now know why!

In my current bill, they have levied “CLIP scheme” charges. I havent applied for any such scheme, neither did I request them to activate this service for my phone. On my dad’s insistance I called up the customer care to have a sweet word with them.

Their executive had the nerve to tell me that the company started with the scheme and decided to charge me for it on its own, regardless of whether I am interested in availaing such a service or not. And even if they began the service and provided it to me, I was never intimated of such service being available in the first place. What if tommorow Airtel decides to provide international calling facility and starts charging me extra rental for that even if I dont want it? Why should I pay for it!!

Time for stock clearing

I hate pending files/ work at office. I am one of those workers who makes others life hell as I want things to be done asap without any delay.

The condition of my inbox and blog was pathetic for a few days, but recently I took it upon myself to clean it all. Like people do the stock taking at the end of the financial year and put up sale to get rid of old stuff I have started the stock clearing drive myself.

Beginning to get rid of drafts. I wish I continue with this effort of getting rid of all my drafts one by one. Lets see how I fare on this one!

ICICI bank branch in Karaikudi

I know half of you (infact more than that) would be wondering where the hell is that?

Well it seems they have a branch there in tamil nadu which their system search simply refuses to recognise. Today I went to them to get a DD made which would be payable at Karaikudi. But was shocked when was refused by their executive on the context that they dont have a branch there. Fortunately unfortunately, I had got a DD made for the same place from the same branch (GK) of ICICI from another executive sitting on the very same seat.

I was the one who had to give that poor girl, the details of the last cheque through which I had got the DD made so that she could locate her ICICI branch. And voila she finally realised that THEY DO have a branch there, 6069, which somehow their search refuses to show up !

Shhh…parliament session is on !

Yah right. My foot !

This is what I felt like telling the security people who kept hushing me from talking to my colleagues. As if my whispering would have disturbed them. Oh yah… Did I forget to mention the strength of MPs in teh parliament who would have got disturbed?

Leaving aside the Prime minister, there were hardly 15 MPs present in the whole session !!

And among those who were present, there were just 4-5 from the opposition. And to top it all, it was the MPs of the same ruling party who were chatting away to glory while a MP was making his presentation for minutes (read hours!!) at a stretch. The poor speaker got so fed up of requesting him to windup by pressing the buzzer that he actually anounced the next MP’s name who was supposed to make the presentation.

Do we still need to question the role of technology in education?

Today I was attending an International Seminar organised by Indian association of Teacher Education and Commonwealth of learning on the topic ” E-Learning in Teacher Education” at my alma mater Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi. Now even though the topic seems relevant, but the content of the papers presented there was anywhere but close to the theme per se.

Rather than focussing on the strategies to incorporate ICT in teacher education, the presenters lost focus and started the debate on its need. The whole talk about application of technology in education has no meaning if we are still questioning its very existence and importance. I think its high time we get out of the debate of whether to have or not have technology incorporation in education in India. We have come way ahead of that menial debate. Its time to focus on its application and the ways we can make the best out of the opportunities available rather than to sit and scrutanise whether its beneficial or not.

Plastics : A necessary evil

Plastics have opened the way for a plethora of new inventions and devices. Its low cost of production, light weight and easy process of manufacture has made it a raw material of choice for the manufacturing of plastic bags and packaging materials. But this virtually indestructable plastic has become the bane of poor developing countries like ours, where the governments battling on many fronts have let the menace of plybags grow.

India’s towns and cities are littered with ploybags. They float on busy roads and wave like prayer flags from the top of the trees. Waste dumped in plastic bags on the street for collection often ends up in the stomach of the foraging cattle. The plastic industry is jumping on the green bandwagon with a new line of environmentally safe products. In reality, these products are no friend of the environment.

Acting irresponsibly

Lately I have been involved in a project of training of teachers working with underprivileged children. Each training workshop lasts for 2 days and usually has teachers coming in for training from 1-2 NGOs of NCR.

Today was one such training workshop involving around 31 teachers from one NGO only. They had in their written confirmation sent a list of 56 teachers, which was shortened yesterday to 45 and eventually only 31 arrived. And we were not informed about any of these changes at all ! I wont start cribbing about the waste of resources ( food etc.) as there is more to gulp.

The training schedule was 11.00 am- 3.00 pm. The participants reported to our institute at 11.45 am, despite the reporting time being 10.45 am.So what, they were just an hour late ! I shouldnt even start off about the height of our displeasure because of their attitude. The icing on the cake was that one of them was even carrying a todder in arm for the training. :o
