Quota Joke

Tortoise and rabbit gave a CET exam. Tortoise got 80% while rabbit got 81%. Both wanted admission in a good engineering college, but the cut off was 85%.

Rabbit couldnt get through but the tortoise did !!

How????

Remember tortoise had won the race when you were in first standard….So… Sports quota !!!! :-P

Examination Strategies

There a few who study throughout the year and are pretty regular with everything. :-|

Then there a few who get in to studying full swing when the preparatory leaves start. :-)

And then there are people (like me) who wait till the day before the exam to realise what exactly they have missed, press the panic button and start studying as much as one can as if there was no tommorow.

Mandalising Education

So now the quota will be increased. Hah !!

I dont really get why there is so much of hue and cry about reservation for equal opportunities. Dont they get the basic and simple fact that by reserving they are discriminating !! If they want to be treated as equals they should fight on equal grounds. They shouldnt get any special treatment. Ok. Agreed they cant afford education. But shouldnt that be an economic issue? They should get all support at the grass root level. That is free basic education. But once they get that support and reach higher education level, they should fight and contest for seats on the basis of their calibre and not their societal status. I have known people from well to do families getting easy admissions only on the basis of their special tag !!

The effort should be to increase the number of IIMs/ IITs or the seats in such prestigious institutions, and not increasing the quota.

I guess that day wont be far off when the general category will have a meagre 3-5% left for them rest all will be reserved.

Old wine served in a new bottle !!

I read through our 10th and 9th five year plans and did the comparative analysis with respect to Role and use of technology in Education, and nothing seems to have worked till now.

Whatever they had planned to do and achieve in the 9th plan (1997-2002) they are still trying to implement the same through the 10th plan (2002-2007). The only change and difference between the two plans has been the words in which the policy has been framed and recommendations have been made.

Even though the government schools have all the infrastructural facilities to implement information and communication technology in their schools, what they seem to be lacking are the competent and most importantly accountable and responsible teachers.

Gold bless India !!

The Great Divide

Social Inequality has been one issue that has been hovering over our education system for decades now. The situation hasnt changed a wee bit over the years. It is still the fight for equality of opportunities. While earlier it was about “who gets education”, now it is about ” Where do you get the education from”.

The education in itself has perpetuated this social inequality. Today the divide isnt anymore about who goes to school and gets education, but its more about to which school do you go and from where you get the education.

I was amazed by the facts and figures that I have learnt recently about our schooling system. Out of 100 children getting in class I in government schools, only 50-60 make it to class II and till class VIII the number lowers down to a meagre 20. And these are pretty conservative figures given out by the Ministry of Human Resource Development Governmnet of India. :|

The school system has become a sifting ground for getting rid of students who cant perform. For students every stage or level becomes a terminal point where they can be iradicated from schooling itself due to the concepts they fail to relate to. Education has become a mode to scare off people at various levels. And the most funny part. Whenever we fail an exam we curse ourselves. There is no disagreement with the system. But its our own inability to make it. There is an inherent consensus on the failure of one’s own abilities and not even a finger is raised towards the system.

Most impressive statement or rather amusing one…

Both Mr. Anil ambani and a road beggar do not care about board exams. Cos it wont change a thing for their kids. While for the former it wont stop him (the kid) from inheriting the legacy, the latter wont get any opportinity of social mobility or status escalation or equal opportunity from these battery of exams when there is no surity for the next meal.

Education can not be a panacea for all ills of the society. It can only aid the emergence of a new society. There is much more that will go in making a new, developed and a better society

Teachers have exams too !!

It is a known fact that Indian education system is geared towards examination. Time and again we find academicians cribbing about this bare truth of our education system. We prepare our students for meeting the final examination. Evaluation of his performance is not based on his holistic development which we boast of preparing through Education but on his rote memory and only a step further to his understanding.

But this is to bring into light the fact that even teachers bear this brunt and are not spared either. Teacher preparation is also exmaination oriented. Research work carries less amount of weightage than the written theory papers. I have to undertake 10 …yes ten theory papers to become a lecturer… oops add another paper of NET. And the very fact that the syllabus of M.Ed (CIE, Delhi University) hasnt been updated since like ages, doesnt leave me happy or amused either.

How I wish we teachers could also gather together and appeal to get a grade system instead of getting percentages. Or even do away with this whole business of writing examination. Only difference being that our parents wouldnt join us to lobby for this cause. :)
