Agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
This is the only song that I have liked from the latest Umrao Jaan starring Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. After hearing the reviews of the movie, I dont intend to waste my money to watch it. But if at all I end up doing so, it will be only for this soul stirring song. Strong awadhi lyrics combined with Richa sharma’s powerful voice leave an impact and a feeling that lingers on long after its over. Read the lyrics of Agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo and you will know for yourself.
Jo ab kiye ho daata, aisa na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
Humre sajanwa humra dil aisa todin
O ghar basa-in humka rasta ma chodin
jaise ki lalla koi khilona jo pahwe
dui char din to khele phir bhool jaave
ro bhi na pahve aisi gudiya na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
jo ab kiye ho daata aisa na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
Aisi bidai bolo dekhi kahi hai
maiya na babul bhaiya kaunu nahi hai
ho, ansu ke gehne hai aur dukh ki hai doli
band kevadiya more ghar ki boli
is aur sapno mein bhi aaya na kijo
us aur bhi sapno mein bhi aaya na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
jo ab kiye ho daata aisa na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo
agle janam mohe bitiya na kijo…

I’m with you, Smiley Face! This mvie was soul-stirringly beautiful and sad. I must admit “Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya is my favorie song in the movie but I actually ejoyed all of the songs. I thought Aishwarya Rai did a phenomal job as Umrao Jaan. Anyone who has seen this movie is on the slow boat, if they did not see the central theme right in front of their faces

Luka chhupi bhent jab hoti
Sajan mere baah sikore
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Pahale haanth lagaa joban pe
Jaise lagee katari
Dheere dheere san sana san
Jiyaraa rahi rahi ke mashole
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Dusaraa hanth gaal pe rakh kar
Pyaaraa sa ek chumma de ke
Jibh se jibh chatole
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Tisari baar to chipka chipaki
Aisaa machaa utpaat
Choli ki doree tore
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Chautha haanth kamar pe rakhate
Harkat karti bijali kaudhi
Jiyaraa ruk ruk le hichkole
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Panchawaa haanth jaangh par rakhate
Chanchal man akulaan
Koshish karne lagaa meraa dil
Abto chhappak chhaiya hole
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Chhatwa haanth se nara tore
Sharm se jhuk gaye nain
Haa kar di kar lo manmani
Jeero se saat ghusere
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole
Satawee baar to anrath hoygaa
Bhoot gayee mradang
Much se cheekh taraak se nikali
Khuno ki pichkari
Dhako pe dhakka tole
Kabhee to yahaa tatole
Kabhee to wahaa tatole

Thanks, Varshita, for the lyric. Could any one please tell me who wrote this poem? Or is it folk song handed down through generations?

This one is for Lorna - the rough translation:
What you have done to me in this life, (is enough )O Lord,
Do not ever let me be born a daughter.
My sweetheart broke my heart so,
He settles in his own life
But leaves me halfway.
Like a child who gets a toy
Plays with it for a few days
And forgets all about it.
(So did my husband, who treated me as such).
Do not make me a doll O Lord,
Which cannot even cry,
Do not let me be a daughter ever again.
Tell me O Lord,
Have you ever seen anywhere
Such a farewell to a daughter,
(Which is) Not witnessed by mother, nor father,
Not even the brother to say Good bye;
Where the jewelry given me is but tears
And the ‘Doli’ is grief personified.
Doors of my parents’ home are shut (forever)
Forbidding me even to dream of it.
Forbidding even to return to what was my home.
Do not let me be reborn as a daughter, O Lord!
What you have done in this life is enough my Lord!
Do not let me be reborn as a daughter ever again!
